Opening Ceremony report

b_200_0_16777215_00_images_prvsah0084.jpgUnder the sponsorship of the City of Rijeka, Mountain-litoral county, City of Opatija, Tourist boards of Opatija and Kvarner, Opatija is hosting the 23rd World Senior Chess Championship for men and women.

During the opening ceremony, speakers were the following: Boris Golubovic, president of Chess club Rijeka, Horst Metzing, FIDE representative, Josip Leko, president of the Rijeka Chess Association, Fernando Kirigin, vice president of the Opatija Major, Marina Medic, the vice president of the Mountain litoral county and Zeljko Jovanovic, minister of sports and education of the Republic of Croatia who officially opened the championship.

 

The championship is being held in Opatija and organized by Chess club Rijeka under the support of Croatian Chess Association for the second time in 3 years.

In the men's tournament there are 201 participants from 40 countries of which 10 grandmasters and 25 international masters while the women's tournament has 25 players from 9 countries.

 

The first favorite of the men's tournament is the former world senior champion Anatoly Vaisser(France) and in the women's tournament the former world champion Nona Gaprindashvili(Georgia) which held her title from 1962 to 1978.

There are 11 Croatian players out of which the biggest chances of high final position have grandmasters Krunoslav Hulak(the second favorite of the tournament) and the former world champion Miso Cebalo.

The championship is being held in Opatija from 11 to 24. November 2013 in the Congress Centre Tamaris of the Grad hotel 4 Opatijska Cvijeta.
